Check-in (1:1) in onboarding

Onboarding check-in: what it is and why not to skip it

Onboarding check-in is a short regular conversation (1:1) between the newcomer and the supervisor (or HR) who monitors the progress of the adaptation. The check-in is not a formality; it often uncovers problems before they grow into mistakes, frustration or departures.

The main objective of the check-in: To align expectations in a timely manner, remove obstacles and give the newcomer confidence that he is on the right track.

When to do check-ins

  • after the 1st week (first impressions and obstacles)
  • after the first month (goals, pace, cooperation)
  • after the 3rd month (evaluation of adaptation)
  • continuously according to the role (e.g. every week)

What to watch for at check-in

  • what is clear and what is not (expectations, priorities)
  • where the barriers are (access, information, cooperation)
  • what support is missing (buddy, training)
  • what’s the next step until the next check-in

Check-ins as a controlled step in SmartFP

In SmartFP, check-ins can be part of the workflow: deadlines, notifications and recording the result. The manager has visibility, HR traceability and the newcomer knows clearly what the next step is.
