Adaptation of the employee

Employee adaptation: what it is and how to manage it without chaos

Employee adaptation is the period after joining, when the new person gradually learns the work, processes, rules and functioning in the team. Onboarding is the start, adaptation is “getting up to speed”, often over a period of 1 to 3 months (depending on the role).

The main goal of adaptation: To enable the new person to manage the work independently, with clear expectations and ongoing feedback.

What helps adaptation the most

  • Clear expectations and goals (e.g. 30-60-90 plan)
  • regular check-ins with the manager
  • buddy system for team orientation
  • demonstrable familiarity with the directives/HEPA
  • training and gradual handover of the agenda

The most common problem

Adaptation runs “in people’s heads”. Exceptions arise, there is no overview of what has been met, and feedback comes late. Often the consequences (mistakes, frustration, leaving) are then dealt with.

Adaptation in SmartFP

In SmartFP, the downstream workflow can be adapted to onboarding: tasks, check-ins, training, step confirmation and status reports. The manager manages the adaptation and HR has traceability without email ping-pong.
